I just installed a new Defiant brand deadbolt on my door, and if I turn the key to lock it, I cannot get the key out, and if I unlock it and remove the key, go inside the knob on the inside will not turn the lock to lock it. Weird, I feel like something is reversed or something but so,meone must have had this. Best Answer: I hope you still have the installation instructions for the deadbolt. I can't give you step-by-step, here, because I don't remember it from the last time I installed a deadbolt. But I think what happened is that you inserted the body of the lock into the latch (the part that goes into the edge of the door) when the latch was in the 'unlocked' position, but the lock body was in the 'locked' position. Remove the body of the lock from the door with the deadbolt flush to the door (unlocked). With the body of the lock in your hand, turn the key in the direction to unlock the door, then back to center, and remove the key. Now, reinstall the lock body. Test it's operation with the key.
