I don't really get people that give this movie a low score. Maybe they don't watch it in Italian, or they read the English subtitles. If so, I agree with you, the movie sucks. It needs to be in Italian, and you NEED to understand Italian to really appreciate this movie.

General Tadamichi Kuribayashi is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. When the American invasion begins, both Kuribayashi and Saigo find strength, honor, courage, and horrors beyond imagination. Therefore the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favor the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester among his staff. The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan.

It is my all time favorite of the series. De Sica and Boldi make a great couple here, they are complementary of each other. I only wish they could include Diego Abatantuono more in the movies they make (like 'Paparazzi'). Anyway, for the sake of this movie, learn some Italian, and than come back to rate it again.
